Skoutari

A village above a sandy bay on the Gytheio–Kotronas road outer Mani

All 0
Skoutari lies on the east coast of Mani, on a rise some 50–100 m above the bay of the same name, along the road from Gytheio to Kotronas and Cape Tainaron. It belongs to the Gytheio municipal unit; the community, which also includes the hamlet of Parasyros, had 327 residents in 2021 (244 in the village itself), and has been growing since the 1990s. Gytheio is about 12 km away and Areopoli about 17 km.
In antiquity the site is identified with Asine, under Spartan control; in 218 BC its people repelled troops of Philip V of Macedon. Local tradition holds that the present village was founded by refugees from Constantinople after 1453. In the 17th and 18th centuries it was a known pirate base, and in 1770 the Ottomans destroyed the Grigorakis clan's tower; the Ottoman force was defeated shortly after at the battle of Vromopigada, on the plain outside the village.
Today Skoutari is known mainly for its long sandy beach, with the small chapel of Agia Varvara at one end, and for quiet summer holidays.
