Sidirokastro

A mountain village of Lower Mani beneath a Byzantine castle outer Mani

All 0
Sidirokastro is a mountain village of the Gytheio municipal unit, at about 500 metres in the interior of Lower Mani, north-west of Gytheio. It has around 80 residents and belongs to the municipality of East Mani.
Its name comes from the castle on the summit of Mount Pyrgos, east of the village, at roughly 630 metres. The summit holds ruins of fortifications and a settlement that researchers of Lower Mani date to the Byzantine period. An improved footpath reaches the top in about a quarter of an hour, with open views over the Laconian Gulf and Taygetos. On the slope of Pyrgos stands the church of Agios Georgios, classed among the megalithic monuments of Mani of the 10th to 13th centuries.
The village is a base for walks on the surrounding heights and combines with Karyoupoli and Passava for a day trip from Gytheio.
