Platanos
A lowland Lower Mani village with a Byzantine Agios Dimitrios in the olive grove outer Mani
Platanos, formerly Liberdo, is a lowland village of the Gytheio municipal unit at about 70 metres on the eastern side of Taygetos, north-west of Gytheio. The community also includes the hamlet of Psathakia (190 m). The 2011 census counted 119 residents, down from 174 in 2001.
The village sits among olive groves and feels quite different from the stony landscapes of Inner Mani. In the grove stands the Byzantine church of Agios Dimitrios, a cross-in-square building with a Helladic-type dome and remains of 12th-century wall paintings. The main church is Agios Georgios, on the public road through the village.
Platanos is a quiet stop on a route from Gytheio up to the hills of Smynos and Vardounia.
