Marathea

A small green community at the foot of Passavas castle outer Mani

All 0
Marathea, or Marathia, is a small village of the Gytheio municipal unit at 155 m altitude, about 11 km west of Gytheio and 15 km from Areopoli, just off the main road linking the two towns. The community includes the hamlets of Marathea, Nea Marathea, Diron and Koulouka, all very small; the village itself had 34 residents in the 2011 census.
The area is among the greenest in Mani, with olive groves and low scrub. Its main landmark is Passavas castle, built by the Franks in 1254 on the site of ancient Las, above the narrow pass from Gytheio into Inner Mani. A footpath leads up to the castle from Nea Marathea, and part of its northern walls can be seen from Diron.
Marathea is a convenient stop for travellers heading from Gytheio to Areopoli who want to climb up to Passavas.
