Karyoupoli
A Byzantine walled town on the isthmus between Skoutari and Oitylo outer Mani
Karyoupoli is a small village of the Gytheio municipal unit at about 100 metres in the interior of Lower Mani. The present village, formerly Miniakova, had 26 residents in 2011. It takes its name from old Karyoupoli, the Byzantine walled town on a rocky hill a little to the west, near Drosopigi.
Old Karyoupoli is recorded from the 8th century and controlled the ancient road joining eastern and western Mani across the isthmus between the bays of Skoutari and Oitylo. It was inhabited until the mid-19th century and figures in the Orlov revolt. Inside the walls survive at least ten churches, the best preserved being the single-nave domed Agios Nikolaos, Agios Georgios and Agios Dimitrios of the 13th and 14th centuries, along with ruined towers, cisterns and a windmill. On the summit stand the Kosonakos tower of 1749 and the early 19th-century stronghold of the Kavallierakis-Fokas family.
In the new village, the church of the Presentation of the Theotokos of 1749 is worth seeing for its frescoes.
