Egies

The site of ancient Aigiai on the Gytheio–Sparta road outer Mani

All 0
Aigies, formerly Chania Koutoumous, is a lowland village of the Gytheio municipal unit on the road to Sparta, at about 40 metres a few kilometres north of Gytheio. It had 195 residents in 2011, down from 226 in 2001. It lies at the northern edge of Mani, in the plain opening towards the Laconian Gulf.
The name refers to ancient Aigiai, which Pausanias places near Gytheio. On the road to the abandoned hamlet of Malliari Sykia, about 2 km east, an archaic rural sanctuary was excavated with rich finds of the 5th and 4th centuries BC. At Malliari Sykia a Maniot tower house has been restored as a model of local architecture.
Aigies is a passing point for travellers arriving from Sparta, with easy access to the beaches around Gytheio.
